Material base of society
According to Historical Materialism, all societies rest on a material base, which is the mode of production or economic system. This consists of the forces of production and the relations of production.
In general, the forces of production determine the relations of production and are considered primary. At other times, the relations of production play the primary role in either increasing or restricting the growth of the forces of production.
