Khatmas as illegal religious gatherings

Chinese state media reported that ninety-six people were killed in riots that erupted after Uyghur “terrorists” attacked a police station and the authorities reacted with “a resolute crackdown to eradicate terrorists.” The violence began with a police raid on an “illegal religious gathering” by a group of village women. We may assume that this was a group of büwis holding a khätmä like that described in chapter 2.
