Ismayil Sidiq was a farmer [presumably from Yengisar, as that’s where he was initially sentenced].
Judging by the dates in his court verdict, he was initially detained on June 19, 2017 [as his sentence was calculated starting from this date]. Just five days later, on June 24, he was sentenced to 10 years by the Yengisar County People’s Court for “propagating extremism”. On July 13, 2017, he was transferred to the Kuytun Prison to serve his sentence.
Ismayil was accused, and found guilty, of:
- covertly praying in his prison dorm room on January 25, 2018
- (interpreted as “illegal religious activities” and “undermining prison supervision”)
- performing an ablution (wudu) in a prison bathroom on March 3, 2018
- (interpreted as “illegal religious activities” and “undermining prison supervision”)
- yelling at his co-inmates for reporting his ablution, and saying: “Are you Uyghurs? Do Uyghurs like to snitch on each other like this?”
- (interpreted as “inciting ethnic hatred and discrimination”)
- refusing to write a “thought report” on February 24, 2018, and using the paper to wipe his nose instead
- (interpreted as “undermining prison supervision”).
He was given 3 years for “undermining prison supervision” and 10 years for “inciting ethnic hatred and discrimination”. Combined, these ended up extending his term by 11 years.
