China uses similar language as European colonizers to describe cultural genocide

Settler colonizing states do not usually publicly articulate goals of cultural genocide. Instead, European states in the 19th used euphemistic language of bringing civilization to the savages. In China’s case, the state justifies its actions against the indigenous peoples of the XUAR using similar discourse adapted for the twenty-first century – poverty alleviation and counterterrorism.
